Muggy

Went for a run with Patrick in the MUGGY weather.  Did the rattlesnake loop with some intervals and met up with brent and shannon on the gutter, where they were walking.  Patrick was hurting (hammie) and dehydrated, so after half of the intervals we too a break.  I ended up doing most of them by myself.  We also did not do the whole loop, stopping at the top of the gutter hill.

Total: 3.25 (?) miles

NYC visit

Thursday through Sunday I did nothing.  Stupid to do nothing.  Well, I did 100 pushups and abs on thurs.  Could have gone for a run in the park, but that just doesn't happen when I'm on "vacations" I guess.  Four days is too long, but I think it was ok to take a couple off after a couple of really hard workouts last week which resulted in my back hurting a good amount.  It is still feeling really weak, and I'm thinking that doing pushups and abs irritates it to a certain extent.  I also ate fairly poorly and did some 40s drinking while here...but hey, gotta have some fun.  Hopefully a Snertz and some other killer workouts this week.

Here's a couple of pictures from the NY INVITE.  Looking good:

Snertz

With Joe, Patrick, Evan, Christian, Miles, Brent, Russ:

- 4 X 15 ground jumps – sprint 40yds after 15 jumps (ground jumps -
touch the ground and then jump as high as you can reaching for the
sky, landing and repeating as fast
as you can). You MUST keep your chest up, and bend not at the hips but
at the knees, with your back as straight as possible. Bending at the
hips is absurdly easy compared to the knees.

- 4 X 15 jump tucks – sprint 40yds after 15 jumps (jump tucks – jump
as high as you can, tucking your knees to your chest). Same thing as
before, bend at the knees and not at the hips, chest up.

- 15-30 pushups 75-100 situps

- 2 X 40 lunge/twists (regular lunges however you twist your torso
left and right at the bottom of each lunge – do not slam knees into
ground – control with your quads – these will give you the power to
keep pivoting and faking late in the day).

- 6 X 40 yard one legged hops. Switch legs after 20 yards without
stopping, switch starting legs every rep. Attempt to minimize steps
needed to reach 40 yards.

- 3 X 20 calf raises. Make sure that at least 75% of your foot is
hanging off of whatever stair/elevation you are putting your foot on.
Always go down to your lowest point of flexibility, and to your
highest point, then hold for 2 FULL seconds at the top, and take
breaks in between sets. 60 on each leg.

- 15-30 pushups 75-100 situps

- 10 X 5-10-5 shuttle/cone runs (start run 5yds touch the line with
hand, run 10 yds the other way touch the line, run 5yds stop)

- 10 X 40yds explosions (run a 40 as fast as you can)

Rest is where this workout has the ability to be very difficult. The
amount of rest entirely dictates how difficult the workout is, and a
goal should always be to cut off one or two minutes from the workout,
while working

took us 45 minutes

Tuesday

Patrick and I did:

12x 20 yrds (15 sec rest)
10x 40 yrds (30 second rest)
8x 60 yrds (45 second rest)
5x 80 yrds (1 min rest)
3x 100 yrds (1:15 min rest)

This was real tiring...

Which is why the pickup we played afterward was pretty pitiful... I struggled to really do much.

Monday after NY

Brent is staying at our house for a bit.

Brent, pbob and I went for a 3+ mile run (27 min) around mill river.  Not too hard, but whatever.
Did 100 pushups and some abs.

NY Invite

So we had the NY Invite this weekend.

In the first two rounds we played Mephisto and the Replicants.  We took them down easily 15-5 and 15-6.  Played pretty well overall, not much to say.

Next was Voodoo.  It was fun to see and play against CK.  We broke them twice to start it off, but were quickly broken back and I think it was 4s or so.  We then just sort of traded tile they were up 7-6, and we took the next two to take half.  In the second half we continued to struggle on O as they threw a poachy d on our handlers.  Our solution: bomb it to Kapinos.  It worked everytime, him just skying the shit out of the same dude over and over again.  There was one point were they threw a regular zone, and threw two cross field blades to work it up the field, and patrick bombed a huge hammer into the endzone.  It ended up floating much more than anticipated, but luckily big PINOS was the receiver, and just embarrassed the crowd around him with a huge grab.  On defense our team was really struggling to get turns as they would just send laser, pinpoint hucks to guys barely beating out men deep.  We ended up winning 13-12 because the hard cap went off.  I had a couple of nice bids to save some swings, so that felt good.

Phoenix was the last game of the day.  Again, big struggles with getting beat deep on defense, and the cutters on O were still having a hard time really flowing well together.  We could move the disc upfield, but it was ugly at times, and frustrating for my brother especially.  I had two turns this game, and managed to throw yet another terrible hammer to my bro.  He made a sick grab for the goal.  We ended up taking them 14-11 I think.

The weather was great all day, but I don't think that people were too ready for the heat.  Even in the first game I felt myself slipping into dehydration, but brought it back pretty well by pounding gatorade and eating come cliff bars.

So we won the pool, and had a first round bye the next day.

First game in the morning was Mephisto again.  They really sucked.  I played 4 points and the final score was 15-3...

Next up: PoNY.  The weather was pretty bad.  Real rainy, making the soft fields even softer.  By the time this game started, trying to make turns on cuts was pretty hard, so seems foolish that we even started the game at all.  Either way, it began.  We broke them out of the start, and I think that goal was the loudest I had ever heard our team before.  It was great. 1-0 us.  Next point they had a couple of turns, but the Ds O just could not convert. 1-1.  Next point, our O goes in, work up alright with some nice unders by Evan and put it in.  2-1 us.  The d goes in, but again could not capitalize on their mistakes (which were plentiful. 2-2.  They then broke us twice in a row.  I had a throw to Evan that was layout d'ed, a throw into a poach, and a bad long throw to Evan.  Andrew also had a couple of turns.  I had one lofted up to me by him, then Heijman and I layed out for it, he hacked me and it went back because he's a cheater (kidding). I felt good about my match up with him though.  We both had bids on d that were missed, which resulted in being covered in the slop that was not the ground we played on.  He didn't really do much while I was gaurding him, and I was able to get the disc.  F the hodags.  Anyway, 4-2 (I think) PoNY.  Finally, after putting Brent and Hirsh in (not sure why not Kanner...)  we were able to get it in.  It took two timeouts that point I think (one after patrick made a great grab to catch a desperation throw from brent.  4-3 PoNY.  The d line then made quick work of the next point, getting the disc after a terrible throw by Riley (another Hodag).  The goal was a huck from Brent to Baylis, who was taking a Carleton Alum deep.  4-4.  This was point was pretty long and there were a couple of turns on both sides.  We were 15 yrds out of our endzone and the bells went off and the game was canceled.  BUMMER!  We would have had it, I swear.

I would also like to say that Zak had a sick game and weekend overall.  Very consistent.  Got a clutch d to the save the tie game, and always trust worthy to catch the disc under, even in that terrible weather.  All weekend he was sick in the air.

Ok weekend.  I felt as like I played pretty well all weekend.  I had 5 turns, but in general got what I need to do done.  I still need to work on focusing on getting the dump so that I can just swing it across, which will make our whole O much better, instead of trying to get uplines.  I also just need to remember that my job is to be a rock, and really not to push long throws I don't have, just because I want the point to be done (like in the NY game).  The O really just needs more of a plan.  We need set plays to just get things moving, make things predictable for ourselves just so that motion can be more fluid.  On d, we really just need to recover from the things that are killing us much more quickly.

As far as team dynamics go, I was really happy about some things and not so much about others.  WE NEED TO BE ON TIME.  We need to have a full warm up as a team, and not give ourselves such a short time to do drills.  However, this weekend I felt more connected to the team than I have all year.  There was a certain point in the Phoenix game, were I realized how jacked up I was, and excited to be playing with this team.  I was up and yelling on the sideline all weekend, and really felt the need to support everyone.  That felt great.  I think that it may be helping to have Baylis, Kanner, and Brent on the team, just because they are some of my good friends, and I have an easy time reading their emotions and intensity.

We have a lot of work to do, but it will come.
